The 1865 Minnesota census showed James C. Cates married to Mary and living in Shakopee, Scott County, Minnesota. Son James also lived with the couple.

The 1870 United States census showed James C. Kates (age 50, born in Maine, farmer) married to Harriet M. (age 36, born in New Brunswick) and living in Shakopee, Scott County, Minnesota. Children James W. (age 16, born in Michigan) and Charles W. (age 4, born in Minnesota) also lived with the couple.

The 1880 United States census showed J. C. Kates (age 60, born in Maine, milk man) married to Hattie M. (age 40, born in Maine) and living in Shakopee, Scott County, Minnesota. Children J. W. (age 23, born in Minnesota) and Chas. W. (age 14, born in Minnesota) also lived with the couple.

Kates (age 84, born in September 1815 in Maine, stock farmer) married to Harriet (age 63, born in October 1836 in Canada) and living in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Son Wellington (age 44, born in July 1855 in Michigan, printer) also lived with the couple.

James C. Kates died August 11, 1903, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
