The 1860 United States census showed Francis Hamel (age 32, born in Canada, head sawyer mill) married to Virginia (age 23, born in Canada) and living in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. Daughter Mary (age 3, born in Minnesota) also lived with the couple.

Mr. Hamel, the new Miller in the steam mill and formerly a resident of Chaska, has purchased the two lots opposite the Catholic Church for $450, and will at once erect a dwelling house thereon 1 ½ story.
