David Ulmer

The remains of the late David Ulmer, for years a well known resident of Chaska, arrived here from Omaha, Nebraska, last Saturday forenoon and the funeral took place that afternoon from the H. F. Degen home, with interment in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Many old neighbors and friends came from far and near to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of the departed. The late David Ulmer was born in Gomeringen, Wurtemberg, Germany, May 18, 1830, settling in St. Louis and later to St. Paul. In the year 1858 he settled on a homestead near Lester Prairie and two years later was married to Bertha Walch. During the Indian uprising of 1863-64 they came to Chaska, and this city continued his home until 1908, when they moved to Omaha, Neb., to make their hoem (home) with their son Henry C. Ulmer. He died at the home of his son on May 2nd, 1916, following an illness of only weeks. He took to his bed on Easter Sunday, and his condition weakened from an attack of pneumonia, could not withstand the ravages of time. During his long residence here the late David Ulmer made and kept many warm friends. He was of a quiet, unassuming disposition, and one whose word was as good as a bond. He lived soberly and quietly and in his dealings with his fellowmen always displayed a spirit of fairness that commanded admiration and respect. He is survived by his aged wife and one son, Henry C. Ulmer of Omaha, and one brother, Christoph Ulmer of Los Angeles, Cal. He was also related by marriage to the Eitel family and the Henry Teich family of this neighborhood, and the John Wetter and Fred Gloege families of Hollywood.
