It came to the knowledge of the editor of The Herald some time ago that the first, or one of the very first settlers of Chaska – David Ebinger, who pre-empted the claim now a part of the Second and Third wards of the city of Chaska, had died recently at his home in Brainerd, Minn., at the remarkable age of 95 years. The old claim shack stood near where the old brick schoolhouse stood – the first school building erected in Chaska, where the DuToit, Iltis, Greiner, Noble, Howe, Raitz, Engler and other early day boys and girls attended public school. This was away back in the fifties. Father Time has wrought many chinges (changes) since those good old days and many of the youngsters who gamboled on the greensward surrounding the old building have long since been gathered to the fold. God bless them all! David Ebinger was born in Germany, March 2nd, 1823, and at the time of his death in October, 1918, was in his 95th year. He came to Chaska in 1852 or ’53 and settled on a government claim. His wife died here. Years ago he sold his property here and with his two sons, George and David Jr., moved to Brainerd, Minn., where they have resided ever since. He died in a hospital at Brainerd, presumably of complications arising from old age. He was a member of the German Evangelical church. Jacob Ebinger, long since deceased, County Treasurer of this county in the sixties, was an only brother. (The Weekly Valley Herald, Thursday, February 20, 1918, Page 8)
